One of the ways in which CRED’s Kenyan partner I Dream Again (IDAK) helps young people realise their dreams is through provision of bursaries for high school education, when the young person is living in conditions that make self-funding an impossibility.
Natalia is one such recipient, and below is her story. There are many more young people like Natalia who would love to be able to go to high school – are you able to help make that dream come true? if you’d like to know more, please message helen (helen.harrison@cred.org.uk).
Here’s Natalia’s story:
Natalia was born in 2010 and is a vivacious and determined young girl residing in Kibera settlement, in Nairobi. She comes from a challenging family background. Having lost their mother in 2010, her oldest sister took on the role of head of the household, looking after Natalia and the other two sisters. The father resides in their rural home and gives little income to the overall family, resulting in them facing continuous financial difficulties despite the elder sister working in a local wines and spirits shop. The household income is minimal, making it difficult for Natalia’s sister to manage both household expenses and school fees for all her siblings. They currently reside in a single-room, mud-walled rented house in Kibra slums. In this shack measuring 10 X 10 feet, resides Natalia, her 3 sisters, and the toddler son of the oldest sister, bringing a total of 5 persons.
Natalia is an outgoing and bubbly individual, known for her ever-present smile. Her infectious enthusiasm is reflected in her active participation in various school activities. She has shown a keen interest in reading novels, displaying a thirst for knowledge. Her commitment to personal growth and academic pursuits is commendable, making her a standout student with a passion for learning.
During her time in primary school, Natalia proved herself as a diligent and hardworking student. She served as the sanitation prefect, demonstrating her commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Additionally, her involvement in clubs such as health, debating, and Christian union showcases her diverse interests and leadership capabilities. Natalia’s participation in basketball and netball not only highlights her athleticism but also underscores her ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Since receiving her bursary from IDAK, Natalia has been able to settle into her secondary school life and is really excelling. She has joined clubs and is doing well in her academics. She has a strong determination to study hard in order to study law later in the university and become a lawyer and to subsequently fight for the justice of the oppressed and vulnerable in the society.
We wish her well in her studies, and pray that she is able to realise her dream.
