Community Participation Story ( A Journey of Transformation and Empowerment)

written by Mesfin, CEO of CBISDO

The Community-Based Integrated Sustainable Development Organization (CBISDO) was founded in 1997 by the visionary philanthropist, Dr. Jember Tefera. At the time, the organization began its journey in Lideta Sub-City, Woreda 5, in Addis Ababa—a place that was once characterized by severe poverty, overcrowded housing, and inadequate basic services. The area was considered one of the most vulnerable and underserved parts of the city, with residents living in dire and often inhumane conditions.

When Dr. Jember Tefera first introduced the idea of community development through CBISDO, the local population viewed the initiative with suspicion and hesitance. To many, the organization appeared to be an outsider attempting to intervene in their lives. Community members were reluctant to participate in any development programs, and building trust took time, patience, and unwavering commitment.

Over the years, CBISDO’s consistent engagement and compassionate approach began to break down these barriers. The organization’s efforts, especially its Elderly Care and Support Program, have gradually transformed perceptions and inspired active community involvement. Today, this same community has become one of the strongest supporters of the program.

Through collective effort and community mobilization, residents now contribute resources—financial, material, and voluntary service—to support elderly individuals who have no source of income or family support. One of the most heartwarming outcomes of this collaboration is the meal service offered at CBISDO’s day care center, where elders are welcomed daily with dignity and compassion.

Currently, CBISDO provides comprehensive care and support to 215 elderly individuals who would otherwise have no means of sustenance. Community members are not only donors but active participants in ensuring the well-being of these elders. They organize fundraising activities, volunteer their time, and even advocate for the program within and beyond their neighborhood.

In recognition of these valuable contributions, CBISDO regularly awards certificates of appreciation to individuals and groups who play a significant role in supporting the Elderly Care and Support Program. These acknowledgments not only honor their efforts but also reinforce the spirit of community solidarity and shared responsibility.

What began as an initiative met with skepticism has grown into a powerful example of how sustained community engagement can lead to lasting social change. CBISDO remains committed to deepening this partnership and expanding its reach, ensuring that no vulnerable elder is left behind.

Together, with the continued support of the community, CBISDO is nurturing a future where care, dignity, and compassion are shared values—empowering the community from within.
