E4All grant used by PSD-Nepal, part 1

As a result of the match-funded Big Give fundraising appeal in December 2023, CRED was able to build up an ‘Education 4 All’ pot of almost £35,000 which was distributed to partners for use in education-related programmes.

In this blog, and the following two blogs, we hear from Bishnu Bhatta in Nepal about how PSD-Nepal used the money.

Overview: On April 20, 2024, PSD Nepal organized a program at Child Bright Future Orphanage, located in Lubhu, Lalitpur, to distribute stationery items for the new academic session and provide general health check-ups and consultation for the children.

Activities: During the visit, Mr. Bishnu Bhatta, Director of PSD Nepal, distributed stationery and sports items to the children. Additionally, medical professionals conducted general health check-ups, consultation and provided medical services to address specific health concerns.

Health Check-up and consultation: The children received general examinations from Dr. Mirza and Dr. Joshi of the Teaching Hospital. Despite some presenting health concerns, most of the children were found to be in good health. One child who experiences seizures was advised against engaging in activities where she might be alone, particularly swimming and running. Similarly, two older girls received guidance on managing irregular menstruation through oral contraceptive pills. Two other young people were provided with recommendations for managing acne during adolescence, emphasizing gentle cleansing and avoiding squeezing. In all cases, the doctors stressed the importance of proactive health management and encouraged the children to reach out if further assistance was required.

Dental Checkup: Dental examinatons were provided for all the children by Dr. Anil Yadav from Bir Hospital. Among the children examined, one was noted to have yellowish teeth and Dr. Yadav recommended a regimen of regular teeth cleaning, brushing twice daily, and gargling with hot salt water after dinner to address the dental concerns.

Eye Checkup: Dr’s Mirza and Joshi also carried out eye examinations. Only one child was found to have specific eye-related issues, she presented with an eye allergy and eye drops were prescribed.

Consultation: Following the general health examination, consultations were provided to address specific health issues among the children. Recommendations were tailored to each individual’s needs. Emphasis was placed on the importance of personal hygiene in improving physical and mental well-being, especially during adolescence. Increased anxiety, confusion, and mood fluctuations, common during this developmental stage, were addressed, with the doctors advising the children to seek further consultation if their condition worsened. They encouraged the children to reach out without hesitation if any further assistance was required.
