In May, work began on writing a 12-week course for prisoners at Nkhata Bay prison, Malawi, where about 180 men are housed. The course, which is linked to the wider programme of projects overseen by Butterfly Space, set out to deliver Bible teaching and life skills training. In September, a graduation ceremony was held to celebrate the first cohort of 20 men successfully completing a dozen weeks of short ice breakers, Bible teaching, discussion and consolidation activities.
The second cohort begin the studies in October and permission has already been granted by the head of the Prison Service in Malawi to roll out the course in all prisons in the country. That’s a dream, but it being dreamt!
The team which created the course consisted of the prison chaplain, a local pastor and two British volunteers who were supporting Butterfly Space. The team is now 7 strong. We look forward to great stories as those who have done the course are released back to their lives outside prison, putting into practice the learning they have experienced and the commitments they have made.
